This year Knight Dragon, the developer behind the Greenwich Peninsula development announced the news that Tom Dixon and the Design Research Studio will be designing thirty five residential spaces in the luxurious Upper Riverside district. The design-led development nestled between The Thames and Ravensbourne, consists of five districts: Upper & Lower Riverside, Meridian Quays, Brickfields and Parkside, each entirely different from the last and boasting unique features. Upper Riverside is perhaps the most eye-catching of all with its crisp modern architecture and cascading roof terraces in a prime river front location next to the O2 Arena.
Turning his hand to the design of just a small number of studios, lofts and penthouses at No.2 Upper Riverside, one of the five glass and stone towers of the district, Tom Dixon has worked closely with architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) to make the most of the light filled structure. SOM Architects in their design of the apartment layout aimed to connect residents with their surrounding urban landscape by offering unmatched views and maximising the natural light that floods through each space.
Renowned for his exploits into decadent industrial style, the new apartments are finished to the highest specification and are a testament to Tom Dixon’s signature stylings. The lofts offer double height living spaces, with unrivalled city skyline views, whilst the studios cleverly maximise space to give the illusion of a far larger apartment with a private balcony on each. The three penthouses are even more opulent still with up to 2485sqft of living space and private terraces of almost the same size at 2350sqft.
The interiors have been inspired by a sense of Britishness as well as taking into account the building’s unusual geometry. Tom Dixon & Design Research Studio created a bold and modern style in the apartments by embracing the dynamic lines of the architecture and using distinctly British materials. The Tom Dixon kitchens feature custom designed enamel splashbacks from the creators of the London Underground enamel signage, combined with copper cabinetry and details made by craftspeople across the country and ironmongery from Birmingham. The bathrooms are a sight to behold with ‘Beam’ suites of anodised rolled steel and the penthouses also benefit from custom made dichroic glass showers and Vola copper brassware.
Every resident of No.2 Upper Riverside gains instant membership to the exclusive Resident’s Club which gives access to a vast private roof terrace and landscaped garden for sunbathing, seating and dining and it is also available for private hire. The club also contains London’s highest residential swimming pool on the 15th floor with views of Canary Warf. The space has again been designed entirely by Design Research Studio and SOM and includes the same stylish interiors throughout as the living areas and it also boasts two gyms, exercise areas for classes and rooftop yoga along with his & hers changing rooms, all with uninterrupted views of the skyline.
Dubbed ‘London’s Ultimate Village’ the Greenwich Peninsula is an ever growing hub of cultural activity in London’s East End. A blossoming community, it is now home to artisan chefs, mixologists, film makers, theatre companies, artists and designers and it is constantly growing as more phases are completed.
